MODERN METHODS IN TEACHING GENERAL GEOGRAPHY

Modern tools and resources in geography teaching – make it easier for students to understand topics through effective didactic transformation.

The MVOGZ course focuses on theoretical and practical aspects of content transformation of topics from general, physical, and socio-economic geography, for the needs of teaching at the second level of primary school. The introductory part presents the theory of content transformation, with an emphasis on its specifics in geography. This is followed by the application of these principles to topics from general geography, in the form of specific model examples and exercises aimed at converting professional content into a form suitable for primary school pupils. Attention is paid to the selection of teaching content, the formulation of objectives, and didactic presentation (e.g. the use of modern teaching methods and strategies, the use of various types of teaching aids and technologies). The course thereby supports students’ ability to connect knowledge from physical and human geography with didactic skills, and develop their competences in the field of creating teaching materials and planning teaching. Within the seminars, students plan, implement, and mutually evaluate model teaching lessons, focused on topics from general geography.

THE AIM OF THE SUBJECT:

Students will explain the principles and specifics of didactic transformation in geography. They didactically transform topics from general geography at a level corresponding to the second stage of elementary school. Students synthesize their knowledge from physical and human geography, from general didactic and subject-specific didactic subjects, and apply them in planning and implementing model lessons. They will explain the concept of the field as a whole, and define complex educational goals, especially the development of geographical thinking. They discuss the possibilities of applying the principles of scientific thinking in teaching geography. Students appropriately include traditional and modern teaching methods and organizational forms in their model lessons, combine appropriate learning strategies for teaching geography (mental, thought, semantic maps, etc.), select relevant sources of geographic information, and appropriately use technology (teaching programmes, models, presentations, geographically focused applications, Google Earth, etc.). Students will assess the didactic transformation of selected geographical phenomena, using examples of exhibits in SC Techmania. Students are familiar with the current state of research in physical and human geography, and are able to select topics for didactic transformation for primary school students.

STUDENT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

The student should be able to distinguish between different approaches to teaching, and understand different perspectives on the positions of the teacher and the student. The student is expected to understand the basic concepts of curriculum documents, and the ability to define key categories of the teaching process, such as teaching objectives, content, methods, organizational forms, didactic resources, and teaching conditions. The student should be able to explain concepts from general physical and human geography, cartography, and GIS.

In addition, the ability to analyse curricular documents and, based on them, perform a didactic transformation of the content on the chosen topic, including the preparation, implementation, and subsequent reflection of the teaching unit, is assumed. The student should be able to create appropriate problem tasks that stimulate the cognitive interests of students, and analyse elements and processes within geosystems at various geographical scales.

He/she can identify and use relevant sources of information, such as professional articles, publications, websites, models, and other materials suitable for teaching geography. He/she is also familiar with technical equipment, such as educational programmes, models, presentations or the Google Earth application, which help to make more complex geographical topics accessible to students. He/she also understands the content and importance of formal and informal education.
