AIM OF THE SUBJECT:

To teach students to communicate effectively in business and work environments. The course aims to equip students with initial language competences at level B1 with competences at level B2, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

STUDENT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

The student should be able to identify and correctly use the basic tenses in English, especially the present simple and continuous tenses, the past simple and continuous tenses, the present perfect, and the past perfect tenses, as well as various ways of expressing the future (going to, will). He/she should distinguish between subject and object questions, stative and dynamic verbs, and know the forms of irregular verbs at level B1, according to the CEFR. Furthermore, he/she should recognize and use conjunctions such as “used to”, infinitive and gerundial constructions, know modal verbs in different tenses, and be able to work with the passive voice across tenses. Knowledge of the 1st and 2nd conditionals is also a prerequisite.

After completing the course, the student demonstrates language competence in business English, especially in the following areas: distinguishing between countable and uncountable nouns in a business context; understanding the differences between the terms work, job, training, and training course; using terms and phrases to describe work. Furthermore, the student is able to distinguish situations appropriate for the use of the present perfect and past tense, and identify phrases expressing satisfaction with work.


The student correctly uses conjunctions with the infinitive or -ing, distinguishes expressions expressing degrees of difference, identifies prepositions in phrases describing trends, and masters ways to express formal requests. He/she understands the differences between the verbs find out, learn, know, and teach, and correctly uses the 1st and 2nd type of conditional sentences.


Furthermore, he/she identifies terminology from the field of finance and start-ups, and distinguishes the meaning of the terms place, space, room, opportunity, possibility, and option. He/she can express recommendations in various ways, uses phrases related to the structure of the presentation, and correctly identifies prepositions related to expressing time and time period.
