INTRODUCTING TO MATHEMATICAL COMPUTING

The UMV course is part of the micro-certificate program Development of Mathematical Thinking, which aims to develop and consolidate students’ mathematical thinking and familiarize them with the language of mathematics and its basic analytical and numerical methods through two sub-courses (JMM and UMV). The course can also be taken independently.

AIM OF THE SUBJECT:

As part of the UMV course, program participants will learn about the mathematical principles and ideas behind basic algorithms used in numerical mathematics, mathematical analysis, geometry, etc. Participants will learn about errors in calculations, the properties of calculations in finite precision arithmetic, and the possibilities of using the Internet and software, especially Matlab and Mathematica.

STUDENT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge at the level of high school mathematics.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

After completing the course, students will:

  • have an overview of possible problems in finite arithmetic calculations
  • understand the iterative principles of algorithms and the conditions under which they converge
  • understand the necessity of approximating problems when solving them on a computer
  • be familiar with some specialist areas in which mathematical theory is used (e.g., message encoding and encryption)
