PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS A

The PSA course is part of the Statistics and Data Analysis micro-certificate program, which aims to familiarize students with the basic principles of statistical reasoning and classical and modern methods of statistical data analysis through three sub-courses (PSA, STAV, and MSM). The course can also be taken independently.

AIM OF THE SUBJECT:

In the PSA course, students will learn the basic concepts and methods of probability theory and mathematical statistics. A significant part of the lecture is devoted to the characteristics of random variables and various types of continuous and discrete distributions. The section on statistical procedures will explain the basic procedures of descriptive statistics and the visualization of statistical data. Students will also learn about the basic types of confidence intervals. Selected examples of statistical hypotheses will be used to demonstrate the process of constructing and interpreting statistical hypotheses.

STUDENT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Fundamentals of differential and integral calculus, basic combinatorial considerations.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

After completing the course, students will be able to:

  • formulate a statistical hypothesis
  • implement basic methods of regression and correlation analysis
  • recognize basic types of discrete and continuous probability distributions
  • select an appropriate statistical test for hypothesis testing
  • use differential and integral calculus to calculate probabilities
  • select an appropriate plan for statistical experiments

TEACHING METHODS USED TO ACHIEVE PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE:

  • Exercises (practical activities),
  • Lecture based on explanation,
  • Problem solving,
  • Self-study,
